Today I'm releasing Core 11, which contains additional video modes for the HDMI output of the AppleSqueezer GS v2. Of course, all video modes are already available with the AppleSqueezer if you use the normal analog video output of your Apple IIGS, as they are produced by the chips inside the IIGS. But the AppleSqueezer GS v2 also contains HDMI output, which gives you a completely digital path from the video memory to HDMI screen, for the lowest-latency, best looking pixel result. And at no additional cost! See also the previous blog post for more details. This also means that the video hardware had to be reimplemented in the FPGA. So far, the main IIGS video mode, so-called "super high res" (SHR) mode was already implemented for HDMI, but the older Apple II text modes were not.
Core 11 changes this: it has the following improvements:
40 column text output
80 column text output
Fixes for SHR mode so that e.g. Wolfenstein 3D now works correctly through HDMI.
See the images below to see how some of it looks! Booting your IIGS also shows the familiar textual boot screen now, instead of the random pixel data that was shown with core 10's HDMI output.
Not yet supported are the older Apple II graphics modes, so if you want to use older Apple II (not IIGS) specific software with graphics, you'll need to use the analog video out for now. Or wait for the next core update :)
Enjoy!
